Background of the Study
Stone tool remains recovered in Ijebu North-East have provided crucial evidence of early human occupation and technological innovation. These artifacts, ranging from simple choppers to finely knapped implements, reflect the cognitive and cultural development of prehistoric communities (Adeniyi, 2023). Detailed analysis of these tools has enabled researchers to trace patterns of human adaptation and migration, shedding light on the subsistence strategies and social organization of early populations (Olatunde, 2024). Recent advances in lithic analysis and dating techniques have refined our understanding of the chronology and context of these artifacts, suggesting a complex interplay between environmental factors and technological evolution (Babatunde, 2025). The integration of archaeological, paleoenvironmental, and ethnographic data has further enriched interpretations of early human behavior in this region. This study aims to critically evaluate the stone tool assemblages and to explore their implications for reconstructing early human occupation, contributing to broader debates on human evolution and cultural development.

Statement of the Problem
The interpretation of stone tool remains in Ijebu North-East is hindered by fragmentary assemblages and inconsistent excavation records. Such limitations obscure the understanding of early human occupation and technological progress in the area. Inadequate contextual data and methodological variations across studies have led to conflicting interpretations regarding the timing and nature of human activities. Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive reanalysis of the stone tool assemblages using standardized techniques and interdisciplinary approaches to better elucidate early human behavioral patterns (Ogun, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To document and analyze stone tool assemblages.

  2. To interpret their implications for early human occupation.

  3. To integrate multidisciplinary data for refined chronological assessments.

Research Questions:

  1. What do stone tool remains reveal about early human occupation in Ijebu North-East?

  2. How do technological variations inform on cultural evolution?

  3. What methodologies can best standardize the analysis of lithic assemblages?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Stone tool assemblages provide direct evidence of early human behavioral complexity.

  2. Technological diversity correlates with environmental adaptations.

  3. Interdisciplinary analyses yield more accurate occupation chronologies.

Significance of the Study
This study contributes to our understanding of early human occupation by critically analyzing stone tool remains. The findings will enhance knowledge of technological evolution and human adaptation, informing both academic research and heritage preservation strategies. Its interdisciplinary approach will be valuable for archaeologists, anthropologists, and regional historians alike (Oluwole, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is confined to stone tool remains in Ijebu North-East Local Government Area and does not extend to other types of prehistoric artifacts.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Stone Tool Remains: Lithic artifacts produced by early humans.

  2. Early Human Occupation: The period during which early hominins inhabited an area.

  3. Lithic Analysis: The scientific study of stone tools.
